Ernest Hyde, Age 30
Private, 23504, 7th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Ernest was the son of Mr Noah Hyde of Fern Cottage, Malinslee, but was living at 6 Barn Fold, Dawley Bank at the time of his enlistment; He had previously worked as a caster at the John Maddocks Foundry at Oakengates.
Ernest had enlisted in Wellington and mobilised about mid-March 1916, he had landed in France in June 1916 and posted to the 7th KSLI with whom he was killed in action at the third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) at the battle of Polygon Wood on the 26th September 1917.
Ernest's body was never found and his name appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial on Panels 112-113 which two names above also includes his fellow soldier from Dawley, Private J. Holmes.
